ABOUT

The ZI is a policy research think tank dedicated to influencing policy development in Zimbabwe according to social democratic principles.

Our fundamental objective is to facilitate alternative research policies for Zimbabwe on critical issues pertaining to political, social and economic development. The ZI’s aim is to be a force for change in Zimbabwe by developing innovative and realistic policy solutions that we hope will produce a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable Zimbabwe.

To build consensus around the social democratic agenda we aim to share our ideas as widely as possible through pamphlets, seminars, policy workshops, conferences and the internet. By creating open forums for public debate the ZI will enable ordinary Zimbabweans to have an input in shaping the future policy agenda of their country and the type of society they want to live in. The facilitating of open debate will also assist in the evolution of a more inclusive and pluralistic political culture.

The ZI does not view its work purely in the context of Zimbabwe but rather in the broader context of African renaissance. The ZI intends to share its work with other like-minded organisations across the continent in order to build consensus around, and progress, the social democratic agenda that is a pre-condition of Africa’s renaissance.

The ZI is an autonomous organisation, independent of government, political parties, business, trade unions and other interest groups. Our activities are overseen and regulated by a board of trustees.

The ZI’s core objectives are to:

  • research and develop policy solutions in priority areas, in particular, land reform, economic stability, constitutional reform, good governance and HIV/AIDS
  • develop state of the art policy development processes and outputs by linking local knowledge with international expertise
  • facilitate the process of increasing the involvement of constituencies, including the private sector, civic society and community-based organisations in policy research, dialogue and advocacy
  • build capacity among Zimbabweans, including those in the Diaspora, on policy issues and democratic processes
  • provide an information and intellectual resource base for ordinary Zimbabweans
  • develop links with like-minded organisations, in particular at the sub-regional and regional level
